Our Mission

Our goal is to assist our clients in protecting and monetizing their technology. We strive not just to get our clients patents, but to get them patents with a scope that will add significant value to their businesses. We draft quality patent applications that are full and detailed in disclosure. We then robustly pursue the desired patent scope through personal examiner interviews at the PTO and persuasively written replies.

Our History

Capital Legal Group was founded in 2006 by Mel Barnes a former Partner at Manelli, Denison and Selter, PLLC and former in-house counsel. Capital Legal Group is one of the first alternatives to traditional law firms with the the goal of providing top tier legal services at a cost competitive price point. In addition, we also give our attorneys control over their career and lifestyle.

All of this is accomplished by creating a firm system that is much more efficient that a traditional firm. Attorneys decide which clients they want to work for and the number of hours they want to work. Each attorney is paid in accordance with the level of his or her client engagement and experience.

Our Strategy

Our strategy is to provide the highest quality of legal services at a cost competitive price point. We accomplish this by hiring great, experienced lawyers and building efficiencies into the services we provide.

As a paperless firm, for example, Capital Legal Group electronically files all documents at the US PTO, which provides a number of benefits to our clients. First, we immediately receive confirmation of the filing, and for the filing of new applications, we immediately receive an application number. In other words, we know our clients get their filing date and are not reliant on couriers or postal mail. Second, our electronic filing reduces client expenses including filing fees, copying charges, and other expenses. For example, we have clients that submit thousands of pages of prior art (foreign and non-patent documents) to the PTO each month. By submitting them electronically, our client incurs no copying costs, which would be substantial.

We also employ an automated prior art management system (PAMS). As an example, for one client we categorized and entered over 900 prior art references into PAMS. Now, each time our client needs to submit prior art, our system automatically populates the 1449 forms with the prior art of the appropriate categories. This substantially reduces costs and helps ensure prior art is not inadvertently omitted thereby strengthening the client's patent portfolio.

In addition, not only can we provide reporting electronically, our clients can access their patent portfolio 24/7 - 365 days a year. Specifically, via our secure access docketing system our clients can securely view and download all documents filed with, and received from, the PTO. In addition, our clients can customize and generate reports detailing all of their cases at their convenience. Of course, many of our clients simply rely on us to provide them with all the information they need.
