Mr. Barnes' practice focuses primarily on patent preparation and prosecution, strategic patent portfolio management, and client counseling.

He has extensive experience in a variety of technologies including modem technology (e.g., information theory), call center optimization software, forensic software technology, network management technology, statistical based advertising software, broadband over power lines,Smart Grid systems, mobile telephone devices and systems, digital broadcast transmissions, EKG monitors, various aspects of copiers, medical devices, RFID technology, battery technology, and various other technologies.

Most recently, Mr. Barnes was a partner at Manelli, Denison & Selter focusing on patent application preparation, prosecution, client counseling, and opinion work.  Earlier in his career Mr. Barnes also gained experience in patent litigation and client counseling at such firms as Howrey & Simon and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.  Mr. Barnes has also served as in-house patent counsel for Current Technologies, LLC, which is a Maryland based communications technology development company.

Mel received his law degree in 1995 from George Washington University and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1985.  Mel worked as an electronics engineer from 1985 until 1993 when he began his legal career. 

Prior to receiving his law degree, Mr. Barnes earned a Professional Engineering license in the state of Maryland. Mr. Barnes is a member of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, the State Bar of Maryland, and the Federal Circuit Bar Association. In addition, Mr. Barnes is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
